Sortelha is one of the most atmospheric villages in Portugal's Historical Villages network. Built around a rocky hilltop and enclosed by defensive walls, it has kept much of its medieval character: granite houses, narrow streets, old gates, stone steps, a pillory, and castle remains that look out over the surrounding countryside. It feels less polished than a showpiece town and more like a preserved stone settlement where time has slowed down. The best experience is simply to enter through the walls and wander. The village is compact, but every corner has strong visual texture - weathered doors, uneven granite, rooflines, and open views from the castle area.
