Les Pénitents des Mées is one of Provence's most unexpected geological landscapes. Erosion carved a thick layer of hardened puddingstone into cones, blades, and slender towers that resemble hooded monks standing above the village. The formation belongs to the Haute-Provence UNESCO Global Geopark and is also protected as a sensitive natural area. The marked discovery route begins in Les Mées and climbs toward the Saint-Roch chapel before following the formations and several viewpoints. The official route is approximately 4.5 kilometres, takes about two hours, and includes roughly 230 metres of ascent. The trail is best presented as a scenic hike rather than a roadside stop: good footwear, water, and caution on exposed or steep sections are important, especially in heat, rain, or strong wind.
