Monsanto is one of Portugal's most distinctive historic villages, rising from a steep granite hill in the Beira Interior. Instead of simply being built on the landscape, the village seems to grow out of it: narrow lanes wind between massive boulders, and some traditional houses use the stones as walls, roofs, or natural foundations. The result is a place that feels ancient, sculptural, and completely different from Portugal's coastal towns. The village is best explored slowly on foot. Walk up through the stone alleys toward the castle ruins for wide views over the plains, then return through quiet streets, small chapels, and boulder-framed viewpoints.
