Gorges de Galamus is both a geological spectacle and an extraordinary piece of engineering. The Agly River cut through the limestone chain, while workers later carved the cliff road by hand and completed its tunnel in 1892. The route twists through overhangs and narrow rock corridors high above the water, creating one of the most dramatic short road passages in the eastern Pyrenees. The safest and most rewarding way to experience the gorge is to park outside the narrowest section and explore on foot, including the path to the Ermitage Saint-Antoine. During July and August, an alternating traffic system operates because two vehicles cannot pass inside the gorge, and buses and camper vans are prohibited from crossing. The post must not encourage stopping on the road, entering restricted areas, or attempting canyon activities without a qualified operator.
