The Laghetti di Marinello reserve protects one of northeastern Sicily's most unusual coastal systems. At the base of the Tindari promontory, shifting deposits of sand and gravel create lagoons whose number and outline change with the seasons, tides, and storms. Salt-tolerant plants, dunes, Mediterranean scrub, and shallow wetland habitats support migratory birds and specialised aquatic life. The reserve can be explored on foot from the Marinello/Oliveri side, while boat services may operate seasonally. Visitors should distinguish the open sea and beach from the protected brackish lagoons: swimming advice can vary by zone and season, so local signage must be followed. The panoramic Coda di Volpe trail connects the lagoon area with the Sanctuary of Tindari but adds a steep climb and exposed sections.
