Las Médulas looks like nature and history collided. The red pinnacles and cliffs were not carved by wind alone: they are the remains of a vast Roman gold-mining system that used water power to break apart the mountain. After mining ended, the landscape slowly became covered by chestnut trees, trails, lakes, and small villages, leaving one of Spain's most unusual cultural landscapes.
